Abdominoplasty ("Tummy Tuck") in Redwood City, California

What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, often called a “tummy tuck”, is performed to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess skin and fat, as well as to tighten the abdominal muscle layer. With age, pregnancy or weight gain and loss, the abdominal area often develops excess skin and fat, as well as laxity in the fascial layer covering the abdominal muscles. Abdominoplasty corrects each of these undesirable components, resulting in a flatter and tighter abdomen. While diet and exercise are always recommended, often the excess skin and extra-abdominal fat can only be corrected with Abdominoplasty.

Liposuction Surgery Options

As with most plastic surgical procedures, there are multiple options for Abdominoplasty, which include the newer minimally invasive procedures to tighten the abdominal wall structures, as well as direct fat sculpting. The options are best discussed with Dr. Papalian, who performs the most current techniques and can offer and discuss the full variety of choices.

At The Plastic Surgery Center on Woodside, Dr. Papalian will discuss the Full and Extended Abdominoplasty techniques, which maximally remove excess abdominal skin and fat. These procedures are reserved for patients who have significant laxity above and below the umbilicus. The “mini” or limited Abdominoplasty technique is offered to patients who primarily display laxity isolated below the umbilicus. This technique is often combined with abdominal liposuction. The newer endoscopic “Muscle Tightening” technique, for patients with abdominal wall laxity without significant skin excess is currently performed as well. Which procedure most appropriately addresses your anatomical findings and will meet your needs is best discussed with Dr. Papalian, taking advantage of his 20 years of plastic surgical experience.

What is the Recovery from Liposuction?

Recovery following Abdominoplasty and the details of recovery will vary widely based upon the procedure selected to meet your needs. Most procedures can be performed as an outpatient, while patients having the more substantial Extended Abdominoplasty will often opt for one night stay in the hospital for their comfort.
